Sectors of Serengeti National Park

Sectors of Serengeti National Park are the demarcated regions of the national park which make traversing and locating attractions easier. Serengeti is called serengiti by the Maasai which means the land of the endless plains, it covers about 30,000 square kilometers across the Kenyan border hence it is divided into four sections including the Eastern section, Northern section, Central section, and Southern section.

It is recommended to travel to the right areas of the region at the right time of the year. One needs to travel to Serengeti following the wildebeest migration where from late December to march and April, one should travel to the Southern Serengeti, from late April to early July safaris should be on the Western and Central Serengeti and from mid-July to early November safaris should be on the Northern part of the park. The least predictable part of the migration is from mid-November to mid-December and the best area to view the migration is the Central Serengeti.

The Western Sector of Serengeti

This is another of the 4 Sectors of Serengeti National Park and this section is marked by the Grumeti River and it has dense bush and forest. The western corridor takes the shape of a Maasai valley running which runs East to West bordered by hills to the North and South. It is 50 meters away to Lake Victoria whereby common games in this area are carnivores, elephants, rare colobus monkeys, and Nile crocodiles.

From the end of April, May, June, and July the western corridor is filled by large herds of wildebeests escorted by Zebras, Impalas and elands south of the river. Many of these animals fail to reach the end of this journey due to dangerous animals which can harm them such as the Nile crocodiles. The corridor is also characterized by a bright blue sky and scenery of the bright green landscape.

The Grumeti reserve hosts animals such as monkeys that reside on the woodlands, and it also covers fort Ikoma wildlife area outside the park where guided wildlife walks can be done and one will have a chance to spot animals and birds and also night game drives are done in this area in Serengeti national park where one will get chance to see the nocturnal animals that are not seen during the day.

Accommodation facilities in this sector include Serengeti Soroi Lodge, Musabi Camps, Kirawira Serena, Grumeti River Camp, and Belabela Camps.

This is one of the Sectors of Serengeti National Park and this sector mostly has visitors from October and November since migrants from Masai Mara National Park in Kenya will be returning to Serengeti due to the green plains available which they feed on. The section is on the East of the Grumeti river going through the Lobo and loliondo under the gol mountains. The wildebeests will cover almost the whole part of this section as they are after the heavy rains that replenish the grass and the water available. This part is the best place to visit while you’re on your safari to Serengeti national park and it also has beautiful views. It offers spectacular animals to view all year round such as predators and beautiful scenery of grasslands.

It has a dotted savannah endowed with acacias and wildlife which make it the most attractive section which attracts most of the tourists in Tanzania. To the South-east, it is covered by short grass plains and contains Olduvai George which falls on to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From December to march and April is when the area is fully occupied by visitors and it is the best time to plan safaris on this section as the animals prepare for the great migration. About 800 calves are given birth per day over a period of three weeks due to the rich grasslands of Ndutu and Kusini where these grasses contain minerals favorable for the growth of the young ones. From July to October, the area becomes very dry.

Nearby lakes Ndutu and Masek there are flamingos flourishing the area by displaying their beautiful pink and in the acacia woodland, other birds flourish which offers a good and beautiful bird-watching safari especially to the birders. The Maswa game reserve which is found in the South West of Serengeti provides posture for buffalos, impala, gazelles, and heartbeasts in the dry season. The black Rhinos can also be spotted in the areas of Olduvai Gorge.

When you are in this part of Serengeti national park you can also visit the Maasai village to observe their culture which includes the lifestyle, way of dressing or colorful outfit.
